Pricing for a hair transplant in Tunisia
There is no fixed price: the package depends on your case, and Dr Seffen prepares your quote free of charge from your photographs, within five to seven working days. How the price is set, what the package covers, what it does not, and why the lowest proposals are rarely a good deal.
The price of a hair transplant in Tunisia cannot be read off a chart. It follows from Dr Seffen's medical assessment of your case as a whole, once your photographs have been reviewed: the surface genuinely involved, the number of grafts it calls for, the nature of the recipient area and the particular difficulties it presents.
This is why the clinic charges a flat fee rather than per graft. Two patients quoted the same graft count may require very different work: a regular, untouched area has nothing in common with a scarred, patchy or previously operated one. A flat fee accounts for that reality; a per-graft price ignores it.

What determines your price
None of these criteria is decisive on its own. It is their combination, examined case by case, that sets the fee.
The extent of the area to treat
This is the first thing looked at. Reworking a hairline over a few centimetres does not involve the same work as covering a frontal area, a mid-scalp and a crown. Width matters as much as depth: a spread-out surface requires more grafts for an equivalent impression of density.
The number of grafts required
It follows from the surface and the density aimed for, and it is estimated from your photographs. It is one element of the calculation, not the whole of it: the same graft count can correspond to two procedures of very unequal difficulty.
The complexity of the case
This weighs most heavily after surface area, and no price chart can capture it.
- A scarred area, burn, accident, surgical aftermath, where the skin is fibrous and less well vascularised
- An irregular, patchy area, where grafts must be placed between existing hairs without damaging them
- A revision after a transplant performed elsewhere, with badly angled grafts to correct
- An already depleted donor area, which demands sparing harvesting
The area of the body
Scalp, beard and eyebrows require neither the same operating time nor the same graft fineness. An eyebrow transplant uses few grafts but demands painstaking work, hair by hair, at a very shallow angle: it is not priced like a scalp session.

Always ask for this list in writing, whichever clinic you consult. A low package price is often explained by what it leaves out.
Comparing two quotes
A quote is not compared on its final figure but on what it covers. Before deciding, ask both clinics these questions:
- Who performs the extraction, the incisions and the implantation? The doctor himself, or technicians?
- How many patients are operated on the same day at the facility?
- Is the amount firm, or can it change on the day of the procedure?
- Is post-operative follow-up included, and for how long?
- Can you see results at twelve months, rather than photographs from the next day?
These five answers almost always explain the gap between two proposals.
Comparison
Why the price is lower than in the West
Our patients come from France, Belgium and Switzerland, but also from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and the Gulf states. They all reach the same conclusion: the price gap with their own country is considerable. Yet there is nothing suspicious about it.
It rests on economic realities that have no bearing on the quality of the procedure. The first, and by far the most decisive, is the cost of labour: for equal qualifications and equivalent degrees, the salary expectations of a doctor, a nurse or a medical assistant are far lower in Tunisia than in Europe, North America or Australia. And a hair transplant is above all human time, seven hours of surgery occupying a doctor and his team.
To this are added the cost of living, payroll and social charges, the price of medical premises and the cost of professional liability insurance, an item that weighs particularly heavily in North America. Equipment costs the same everywhere: punches, blades, holding solution and microscopes come from the same manufacturers, whether you operate in Tunis, London or Sydney.
A word of warning
The real cost of a cheap transplant
Many clinics attract patients with spectacularly low packages. In almost every case, the price only comes down by cutting what is invisible on the day: the time devoted to each patient, the qualification of whoever actually operates, and the long-term strategy.
The consequences fill revision consultations: hairlines set too low and too straight, grafts too large giving a pluggy look, density poorly distributed, and above all an over-harvested donor area, taken well beyond what is reasonable to inflate an advertised graft count. That last damage is the most serious: it is largely irreversible and it mortgages every future procedure.
Repairing then costs more than doing it properly the first time. It often takes two further sessions, sometimes more, with the sole aim of limiting the damage rather than achieving the result hoped for. Add it up: the cheapest package becomes the most expensive of all.
A hair transplant is permanent. What the surgeon draws at thirty, you will wear at sixty.

What patients ask about pricing
Do you charge per graft?
No. The clinic sets a flat fee, and that is a deliberate choice. Per-graft pricing gives the illusion of transparency, a unit price, a multiplication. But it rewards quantity rather than outcome, and it encourages harvesting more than necessary in order to inflate the invoice. Above all, it ignores the fact that two procedures with the same graft count can demand radically different work depending on the nature of the recipient area.
A flat fee commits the clinic to a procedure and a result, not to a tally.
Can the amount change on the day of the procedure?
Never. The amount stated on your quote is firm and final. It will not be revised on the morning of surgery, nor increased because direct examination reveals a slightly larger surface or a higher graft count than estimated.
That is precisely what flat-fee pricing allows, and it is where the difference lies with clinics that charge per unit: there, a count revised upwards on the day translates into a heavier invoice, presented to a patient already in theatre and in no position to refuse.
Is the quote chargeable?
No. Reviewing your file, the diagnosis and the quote are provided free of charge and without any obligation on your part.
Are flights and the hotel included?
Flights remain at your expense and you book them freely.
For accommodation, the clinic can handle the booking of your hotel to simplify your arrangements, but payment is made directly to the hotel: the clinic never collects accommodation charges.
Transfers between the airport, the hotel and the clinic are included in the package.
Why do two patients not pay the same price?
Because no two scalps are alike. For a comparable surface, an untouched, regular area is treated faster than a scarred or patchy one, where every graft must be placed between existing hairs without damaging them. A revision after a failed procedure elsewhere also requires extracting or reorienting badly placed grafts.
The flat fee reflects real operating time and technical difficulty, not merely a surface on a photograph.
Are there hidden charges?
No. The quote lists what it includes and what it does not. Nothing is added afterwards: no graft supplement, no administrative fee, no additional charges on the day of the procedure.
The only expenses that remain yours are those listed as not included, your flights, your hotel, your post-operative medication.
Can someone come with me?
Yes, and it is often a good idea: the journey home is more comfortable with company, and a trusted person retains post-operative instructions more easily. Your companion has use of the waiting room during the procedure. Mention them in your request, particularly if you would like the clinic to handle the hotel booking.
Should I budget for a second procedure?
Sometimes, and it is better to know from the outset. Where baldness is extensive, the anterior two thirds, which frame the face, are treated first, then the crown in a second session after fifteen months. This strategy preserves your donor area rather than exhausting it at once.
Where it is anticipated, it is stated in the initial quote, never revealed afterwards.
Is any of it reimbursed?
Hair restoration is classed as aesthetic surgery and is not reimbursed by national health insurance in France or Belgium. An exception exists for certain scarring alopecias following a burn or an accident: check with your insurer, as a medical file can be submitted.
