This is simply a small area of beard grown in the centre of the chin, just below the lower lip. This type of beard can give a certain style, in the form of a fine triangle pointing downwards, provided it does not take up the whole length of the chin. It can extend into a vertical strip in the middle of the chin, that is, simply a line of beard running from below the lower lip to the start of the chin.

One of the most popular short beards is the goatee. It generally covers the whole area of the chin and can be complemented by a soul patch. The jawline and the cheeks are simply shaved regularly to maintain the goatee, which frames the mouth and chin without extending beyond. The opposite style covers the jawline and the cheeks, but not the chin. This type of beard gives an appearance similar to long sideburns, like those of Elvis Presley, probably the best-known figure to have worn them.

There are many other beard styles calling for more creativity and upkeep, such as the balbo, which resembles an inverted T and can be worn with or without a moustache, or the Van Dyke, a variation on it inspired by the 17th-century painter.
