Myths about hair loss

"Hair loss is inherited from the mother's side"

Several studies carried out over the past 10 years have tried to answer this question. They show that despite the presence of a genetic marker coming from the maternal side of the family, a man is 2.5 times more likely to be affected by hair loss when his father is. Moreover, hair loss is not caused by a single gene, which means the genetic cause can come from either side of the family and does not necessarily skip a generation.

"You should avoid washing your hair too often"

You may choose not to wash your hair, or to wash it every day: there is no evidence that either causes hair loss, whether shampoo is used or not.

"Avoid wearing hats or caps too often"

Hats, caps and helmets are often suspected of being one of the causes of hair loss, or at least a risk factor. It is true that constantly putting on and taking off a cap or a helmet can pull on certain follicles and hair roots, but it is hard to say that this directly contributes to hair loss. It is the way headwear is worn that could harm the hair, rather than the fact that the hair is covered.

"Everyone goes bald at 50"

Androgenetic alopecia draws no distinction by age. Once it begins, it does not stop, hence the importance of treating early if its effects are to be limited. The age at which alopecia begins differs from one person to another.

"Sun exposure is bad for the hair"

No, prolonged sun exposure does not cause hair loss.

"High testosterone levels are responsible for hair loss"

They are not. Androgenetic alopecia affects follicles whose sensitivity to DHT is greater.
