About the beard transplant

Beard restoration is a minimally invasive procedure that consists of harvesting follicles from one part of the body and reimplanting them on the face. This thickens the beard and completes it where needed. A thinning or patchy beard can be the result of:

• Genetic factors
• Injury
• Cosmetic treatments
• Treatment for skin cancer

How does a beard transplant work?

To carry out the procedure, the follicles must be harvested from an area of the body where hair growth is satisfactory, so as to create a fuller and more attractive beard. The FUE method is used for this type of transplant, in order to select follicular units containing the number of follicles wanted.

Dr Seffen performs beard transplants in the calm, quiet setting of his practice, under local anaesthetic. Most patients are comfortable during the procedure despite its relatively long duration. The follicles are first harvested, then prepared for implantation, which is carried out with great precision so as to avoid any irregularity in relation to the beard already present and to obtain a perfectly natural result. The length of a beard transplant varies considerably with the goal in view: between 2 and 5 hours.

What to expect after the transplant

Unpleasant sensations may be felt after the procedure. Crusts will also begin to form over the treated areas. These are normal consequences of the transplant and generally clear within one to two weeks.

The transplanted hair should also be expected to fall out a few weeks after the transplant. Once that has happened, the natural regrowth of the grafts can be seen, filling in the bare areas or thickening the beard. It will be advised to avoid shaving or trimming the beard for 10 to 14 days, to let the transplanted follicles heal undisturbed.
