Hair transplant: age, results and price

Why a transplant before twenty-five usually calls for a second one, when transplanted hair actually grows back, and what governs the price of the procedure.

Hair loss in young men

Some may think: "I am twenty, I am young, this must be the right time to have a hair transplant." However, if a patient under twenty-five has a transplant, he will probably need a second one later on, because this is premature hair loss which may change with age. It is therefore generally preferable to consider hair transplantation once the hair loss has stabilised, either on its own (often at a later age) or with the help of treatments that have brought it under control. Men in their fifties can still be good candidates for a hair transplant, provided they have enough hair at the back of the head for the grafts to be harvested. Men in their twenties are therefore advised to consider drug treatments and PRP injections first, and to wait so as to genuinely benefit from thick, strong hair through a transplant.

Regrowth of transplanted hair

A hair transplant does not give immediate results. The transplanted hairs first fall out after about three weeks, but the follicles continue their growth cycle provided they have a sufficient blood supply. The hair starts to grow after 60 days, and the result of the transplant is clearly visible after 9 to 12 months.

A scalp transplant takes only scalp hair

In hair restoration, body hair cannot be used for the transplant. Body hair has a different texture and growth pattern from scalp hair, and the follicular units of body hair contain only one or two hair follicles, so they are not viable. Hair taken from the back of the head is dense and has the texture required, which is why a transplant is not possible when that area is also short of hair.

The price of a hair transplant

The price of hair restoration depends largely on the number of hairs to be transplanted to achieve the result the patient wants. The procedure is very expensive in France and throughout Europe; certified, experienced practitioners such as Dr Seffen, however, practise abroad at thoroughly affordable prices, up to 60% less than in France.
